Cornerstones: Our Home Next Door

Our Home Next Door Capital Campaign

  • Our Home Next Door will be an affordable housing facility for women with children who have experienced family violence. The goal for the Capital Campaign is $7 million for construction, furnishings and upkeep, with about $3 million coming from community donations.
  • Safe and secure accommodations in a healthy, supportive community will help promote continued healing and independent living.
  • Edmonton’s tight rental market has made it difficult for women and children to find affordable places to live.
  • Former WINGS clients have had to leave programs early to secure new homes, stay longer in temporary shelter spaces, or return to abusive situations if affordable alternatives couldn’t be found.
  • This building will offer a smooth transition for women in need to choose independent living away from abusive situations, and maintain their connections to supportive programs, staff and community members.

Building features

  • The building was designed by ziola newstudio architecture and is being built by Clark Builders.
  • This will be the first residence of its kind in the Edmonton area, helping families transition from shelter accommodations to more independent living within the same supportive community.
  • The building offers 30,000 square feet of space and 29 fully furnished apartments for women and children and 1 for a resident building manager. Many units are designed with a flexible bedroom to allow suites to be either 2- or 3-bedroom as needed.
  • The building will include enhanced security, laundry and folding rooms, an on-site day care and storage space.
  • Bright, sunny common areas and shared amenity spaces help foster a sense of community.
  • Durable finishes and natural materials in common areas and suites will stand up over time.
  • A well-planned building envelope will result in lower long-term energy and maintenance costs and a healthy building.
  • Outdoor amenities include a playground, large roof patios, landscaped sitting area, and future garden plots.
  • The building’s orientation on the site will maximize security for residents and the daycare while blending with the existing streetscape.

WINGS of Providence

  • WINGS of Providence is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide comprehensive transitional programs and independent living in a safe, secure, supportive and healthy environment for women with children who have experienced family violence.
  • WINGS stands for “women in need growing stronger.”
  • WINGS currently provides second stage housing services next door to the site for Our Home Next Door. The existing facility provides long term accommodation and accompanying support services for women with their children.
  • From April 1, 1987 to Oct 31, 2010, WINGS accommodated 905 families (905 women with 2,085 children, for a total of 2,990 people).
  • From April 2009 to March 2010, Alberta’s domestic violence shelters accommodated 6,169 women and 5,601 children. These numbers tell us there is still much work to do to end family violence.
  • Executive Director Pat Garrett was nominated for a 2011 Larry Shaben Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Housing Sector at the 2011 Homeward Trust ROOPH Awards, which recognize individuals, organizations, and businesses that work to address affordable housing and homelessness initiatives in our city.

The City of Edmonton’s Cornerstones Plan

  • Our Home Next Door will receive a $4.3 million investment by the City of Edmonton and the Province of Alberta through the Cornerstones Affordable Housing Program.
  • The Cornerstones Plan brings communities, businesses and governments together to develop more available affordable housing options.
  • Created by Edmonton City Council in partnership with the Government of Alberta and community organizations, the Cornerstones program supports Council’s strategic vision to improve Edmonton’s livability and manage growth.
  • As of year-end in 2010, 2,542 safe, secure homes have been achieved for citizens and families in need under the Cornerstones program.
  • The program has already exceeded the goal set by City Council in 2006 of an additional 2,500 affordable homes completed by 2011.
