The City of Edmonton administers the collection of apartment and condominium waste by City crews and private contractors.

1. How do I get a waste dumpster for my apartment building or condominium complex?

2. What can go in the waste dumpster?

Waste dumpsters are for household waste only. This includes regular bagged household waste, food waste, packaging, old clothes and small household items.

The following items cannot be put in the waste dumpsters:

  • large items (furniture, televisions, stereos, sofas, etc. )
  • mattresses and box springs
  • large appliances (fridges, stoves, freezers, dishwashers, hot water tanks, etc. )
  • building/renovation scraps (drywall, carpeting, lumber, etc. )
  • dirt or sod
  • household hazardous waste (e. g. , oven cleaners, paints, pesticides, toilet cleaners, batteries, propane tanks, light bulbs, solvents, computer equipment)

Overflowing bins will result in additional pickups and additional changes. Bins are considered overflowing it there is waste material visible above the rim.

3. What can I do with the items I can't put in my waste bin?

All unacceptable items can be brought to City of Edmonton Eco Stations or to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre.

4. What if I don't have a suitable vehicle for hauling large items?

The yellow pages list several private haulers under the heading "Garbage Collection". Also, the online Reuse and Recycling Directory contains a list of private haulers (keyword - Hauling Services).

5. As a site manager, what are my responsibilities regarding my waste bin?
  • Site management is required to keep the area immediately surrounding bins and/or exit doors free of obstructions (e. g. , snow, vehicles, loose refuse).
  • If your bin is on castors please ensure it is free-moving at all times.
  • If the bin access is obstructed, collection will need to be rescheduled and may be subject to additional charges.

    6. Who do I call if my bin was missed on collection day or if I need an extra pickup?

    Please call the Waste Management Customer Support Centre at 780-496-5698, or your area field inspectors. Please give us 24 to 48 hours notice before you need the extra pickup.

    • This is the approximate time needed to reschedule a truck for your area.
