Master Composter Recycler Program

Once a year, Waste Management Services hosts the Master Composter/Recycler Training Program.

Volunteers learn about environmental stewardship in Edmonton including the history of Waste Management Services in Edmonton, home composting, household hazardous waste, vermicomposting and residential recycling. This intensive three-week course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips to various City facilities.

The 2011 training course graduated 37 new volunteers who are really enjoying their volunteer assignments and are being kept very busy responding to community requests.

What do Master Composter / Recyclers do?

After finishing the course, graduates contribute a minimum 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Graduates become important resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the benefits of composting and recycling.

Examples of volunteer activities include:

  • Help at Reuse Fairs
  • Help friends and neighbours start composting
  • Represent Waste Management Services at public events
  • Assist with programs and maintenance at our Compost Education Centres
  • Host a movie night or lunch-hour session
  • Give community and school presentations
  • Green your workplace or community centre
