Greys Paper & Glass Recycling Facility
|
The paper production dome, at 77 metres wide and 26 metres high, is the largest commercial /industrial monolithic dome structure in North America. |
The facility was built by Greys Paper Recycling Industries Ltd. in partnership with the City of Edmonton. The initiative will achieve “closed-loop recycling” by processing waste paper collected from City offices and other sources into recycled paper products for sale back to the City.
Greys will also incorporate waste glass into bricks with a special coating to reduce nitrogen dioxide at ground levels.
Greys’ operations will provide approximately 100 permanent jobs and provide businesses with a unique opportunity to close the recycling loop by using paper products produced from their waste material.
While the facility is expected to by fully operational in 2012, Greys and the City are currently collecting materials needed for the operations. Residents can drop off old clothing and fabrics (to be used in the paper production) at select recycling depots and businesses can contact Greys or the City for waste paper collection.
Closed Loop recycling
Closed-loop recycling is when recyclables are reprocessed and turned into the same or similar products, which can be recycled at the end of their useful life. Materials can be used over and over with little or no loss of material volume.
