Fire Prevention Week

"Have 2 Ways Out"

October 7 – 13 is Fire Prevention Week. The theme this year is “have 2 ways out.” Edmonton Fire Rescue will be in the community informing and assisting seniors, schools and the general public with fire escape plans and fire prevention.

Home fires can happen at anytime and move extremely fast, this is why Edmonton Fire Rescue Services takes preparing and practicing two ways out of your home very seriously. Between 2009 and 2011, there were 973 home fires reported resulting in 173 injuries and 17 fatalities.

Edmontonians should install smoke alarms in every room and test them monthly. Escape plans prepare your family to think and exit quickly when your smoke alarm sounds.

Your escape plan should be discussed with the whole family and include:

  • A floor plan showing all doors and windows
  • Two ways out of every room marked in your plan
  • A marked meeting place that is a safe distance outside of your home
  • A separate plan to assist any young children, older adults, or people with disabilities
  • Practise, practise, practise
