Education Property Tax
Each year, the Alberta Government determines the budget requirement for provincial education purposes. As part of that process, the government determines how much of the total education budget will be paid through the property assessment and taxation system in the province. The total assessment of all property in the City of Edmonton is used as the basis for determining the City's share of the total education property tax requirement (otherwise known as the education property tax requisition). The City of Edmonton, in accordance with provincial legislation, is required to collect the required funds through the assessment and property tax system to pay the City's share of the total provincial education property tax bill.
The assessment of your property is used to determine your share of the funds needed by the City to pay the City's share of the total provincial education property tax requisition.
In 2009, the average residential property tax bill in Edmonton directed about 66 per cent to the City to fund municipal services, and the remaining 34 per cent went to the Alberta government to pay the education property tax requisition. The amount of your education tax for 2010 will not be known until the province passes the annual provincial budget. The province will then notify each municipality in the province how much each municipality must contribute to the provincial education budget. As a result the City will not know how much the education property tax requisition will be until that time.
