Metro Line (NAIT to North City Limits)
About the Project
![]()
The Northwest LRT will travel from NAIT northwest to a future park and ride site planned at the northwest city limits.
The LRT service areas will include:
- Grand Trunk
- Castledowns
- Griesbach
It will also provide the opportunity for a future connection to the City of St. Albert.
Building the Northwest LRT is part of the Transportation Master Plan’s vision to expand LRT service to all sectors of the City by 2040.
Because land use and transportation are closely linked, LRT growth will be guided by the principle of “transit oriented development”. Its goal is to create compact neighbourhoods with a mixture of residential, employment, recreational and business opportunities within convenient walking distance of transit.
Where We Are
Council Approved Concept Plan
May 8, 2013
Currently no budget has been allocated to continue the project to the next stages of preliminary engineering, design and construction.
City Council sets the priorities for LRT construction and determines how funding will be used, however the City's 30-year Transportation Master Plan includes extending LRT to all sectors of the City by 2040.
Along with the two subsequent amendments attached to the project by the Transportation Committee on May 1, 2013 the concept plan was approved.
