Neighbourhood Impacts
Those impacted by new LRT stations include:
- Downtown neighbourhood
- Central McDougall neighbourhood
- Spruce Avenue neighbourhood
- Commuters
Traffic Safety
The Metro Line has LRT signals, signs, crossing arms and pedestrian warning bells to keep pedestrians and motorists safe.
The City recognizes the need to strike a balance between safety and reducing impact to surrounding communities. Crossing bells will be directed to pedestrians to limit the potential for noise to carry beyond intersections along the Metro Line. Noise levels will be monitored and adjusted, if necessary, to meet City policy.
Road Closures
Permanently closed roads, with exception to emergency vehicles, include:
- 105 Street between 107 Avenue and 108 Avenue
- 105 Avenue between 103 Street and 105 Street
- 104 Street between 108 Avenue and Kingsway
Noise and Vibration
- The LRT runs on a continuous welded rail, a technology that minimizes noise vibration
- Noise levels will be equivalent to current city traffic noise
- Warning bells at pedestrian crossings will be directed at sidewalks to reduce noise
Security
Residents expressed concern that LRT stations may attract homelessness and criminal activity.
The City applies the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design to LRT projects. Principles like clear sightlines and community space have been shown to foster community ownership and minimize crime.
