North East Transit Garage

What's New

Construction on the Northeast Transit Garage (NETG) will begin in June 2016.

About the Project

The $186 million Northeast Transit Garage (NETG) will replace the aging Westwood Garage and enhance a highly visible piece of land that has sat vacant for decades.

Building statistics:

  • 500,000 square feet
  • LEED-Silver certified
  • Capacity for 300 buses
  • Administrative and operational space for up to 700 drivers and staff
  • Will include credit union that is currently at Westwood Garage

In 2012, land was secured for the new building on the old Canada Packer's site at the northeast corner of Yellowhead Trail and Fort Road, home of the brick smokestack. Construction is anticipated to be completed by late 2018.

Historic Smokestack

In 2014, the City of Edmonton obtained a historical designation for the brick smokestack, which will be incorporated into the overall site redesign. The smokestack is all that remains from the Canada Packers meat packing plant, which was built in 1936.

In 2015, the smokestack was designated as a Municipal Historic Resource (July 7, 2015 City Council meeting minutes, Item 7.1, Bylaw 17259), and added to the Register of Historic Resources.

The historic site will be landscaped and a sidewalk will be built from Fort Road to the smokestack, going around the remaining building foundations. The site will include historical information panels, lighting, and benches.
