Conventional Transit Operator Full-Time

ETS Conventional Transit Operators operate a variety of vehicles including 40' diesel buses, 40' diesel/electric (Hybrid) buses, 60' articulated buses, and community service buses. Shifts are typically ‘split' (two segments of work during a day) to cover the weekday morning and evening peak rush hours. Working weekends, afternoons, evenings, nights, and statutory holidays is part of the job.

You will be able to make a more informed decision as to whether or not you want to pursue a career as a Transit Operator by observing Operators “on the job.” Applicants who want to move forward in the hiring process must spend time on the transit system observing Transit Operators as they perform the day-to-day functions of their job driving and working with the public.
Hours of Work
Full-time Conventional Transit Operators work various shifts (straight or split) any 5 days of the week with a guaranteed minimum of 67.5 hours bi-weekly the first year and 74 hours bi-weekly thereafter.
Salary Range and Benefits
The rates quoted are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 569 and the City of Edmonton. Current (2016) rates of pay are:
- Training Rate - $22.13 per hour
- Post Training Rate - $27.21 to $34.01 per hour
This is a permanent position with a probationary period of up to 6 months. Benefits will begin 90 days after your start date.
Job Requirements
- Grade 12 or General Education Development (GED) or equivalent combination of qualifications and experience.
- Proven ability to deal directly and professionally with the public.
- Valid Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator's licence (non-probationary and non-graduated Class 5 status).
- Must have held valid operator's license for 3 consecutive years.
- Applicants must provide a current driver's abstract (obtained within 14 days of assessment date) indicating no suspensions and no more than 3 demerits applied against the driver’s license over the previous 2-year period (demerits applied do not include any demerits reduced by a Defensive Driver Course). Suspensions of registry services will not be considered without a reinstatement date. The abstract is not required at the time of application, but must be presented before testing.
- Applicants must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job such as: operating bus controls and providing assistance to passengers with wheelchairs, strollers.
- Applicants must be able to pass a Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation test (FARE) test in addition to a City of Edmonton medical examination.
- Applicants must pass all assessments and testing.
- Applicants must successfully complete a security clearance prior to training.
- Applicants must provide 3 references from persons who have supervised or trained the applicant and must pass reference checks. All references will be contacted.
- Selected applicants must successfully obtain an Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's Class 2 written Knowledge Test and Alberta Air Brakes Certification at their own expense. The Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's Class 2 written Knowledge Test and Alberta Air Brakes Certification must be in the possession of the applicant prior to training. The Class 2 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's road exam will take place during training.
- Selected applicants must successfully complete the ETS Operator Training Program (30 days), including successfully passing the Class 2 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's road exam.
