Local Motion - Eco-Friendly Transportation

As gas prices rise, roads become busier, and people become more aware of their carbon footprints. Many are rethinking their travel options. They are choosing EcoMobile options - walking, cycling, ride-sharing or taking public transit.

What is EcoMobility?

  • Healthy – A great way to incorporate physical activity into daily tasks and avoid the frustration of sitting in traffic.
  • Accessible and Flexible – It includes many travel options to fit individual needs.
  • Good for the Environment – Fewer single passenger vehicles on the road means less pollution.
  • Vibrant and Liveable – As more residents use their neighbourhood parks, pathways, and sidewalks, they are also reconnecting with their community and creating safer, vibrant, and more livable neighbourhoods.

The Global Alliance for EcoMobility describes EcoMobility as mobility without dependency on the private car.

What is the Local Motion Pilot Project?

It's a unique collaboration between the City and one neighbourhood to transform that neighbourhood into a more EcoMobile community. Parkallen was chosen to be the host neighbourhood and was involved in the design of the project, which included:

  • Special events
  • Workshops or “Learn To…” programs
  • Public Transit incentives
  • Community Bikes or a Bike Loan program
  • Temporary physical changes, e.g. adding bike lanes
  • A feature in the 2009 ICLEI World Congress, held in Edmonton June 14-18, 2009

The pilot project concluded at the end of June 2009.

Next Steps

The success of the LocalMotion pilot project will have impact on City staff as they plan for the future. Similar programs could be brought to other neighbourhoods and communities. LocalMotion project items like the "try-it" library, the kilometre logs and community carbon reduction challenge are being considered as on going programs for future events.
