Drought-Stressed Tree Replacement

The City has been conducting an evaluation of Edmonton's drought-stressed trees for the past several summers. Now, we are working on replacing the trees that were lost.

Trees removed from city boulevards will be replaced on a priority basis.  Trees removed from parks and road buffers will be replaced as resources permit.

Staff will continually evaluate Edmonton's trees over the summer. Trees will be reassessed before they are removed. As always, any tree hazardous to people or property will be removed on a priority basis.

Did you notice a newcomer to your neighbourhood?

We've been busy planting new trees in the city. If there's a new tree in your neighbourhood, we encourage you to help us out by watering it – we'll take care of the fertilizing and pest management.

Please water the tree if you notice conditions are dry, allowing the hose to trickle water for 30 to 45 minutes. Allow the ground to dry between waterings. The best time to water is in the early morning or evening.

Help protect this new tree by keeping lawn mowers and weed trimmers away from the trunk. Please leave the wood chips around the base of the tree; they protect the trees by cooling the root zone and reduce evaporation.

Each tree is staked at the time of planting. The tree stakes will be removed in three years.
