Thanks to cooperative weather, a diligent workforce, plenty of patience from Edmonton motorists and approximately $231 million in taxpayer investment, the City of Edmonton is wrapping up one of the busiest transportation construction seasons in history by completing several major projects.

“We are excited to be closing off the 2011 construction season with significant milestones achieved,” says Transportation Services General Manager Bob Boutilier. “This was a big year for construction in Edmonton and we owe a huge thank-you to City staff and our private sector partners for this shared success.

“I’d like to offer a special thank-you from the City of Edmonton to all residents for their patience. We completed a lot of roadwork this year, and everyone will benefit from the improved infrastructure.”

Several major projects received the primary focus of the 2011 construction season, including work on the Quesnell Bridge portion of Whitemud Drive, the 23rd Avenue/Gateway Blvd. interchange and rehabilitation of Scona Road/99 Street.

The City’s 2011 transportation construction season included work on the following arterial road rehabilitation and growth projects:

  • Quesnell Bridge widening and rehabilitation
  • 23 Avenue/Gateway Blvd. interchange
  • Scona Road/99 Street rehabilitation
  • Whitemud Drive/17 Street interchange (year 1 of 2)
  • Fort Road/131 Avenue-137 Avenue rehabilitation (year 1 of 2)
  • Rabbit Hill Road/McGrath Blvd. - Riverbend Road widening (year 1 of 2)

Several two-year arterial road rehabilitation and growth projects will be carried over into 2012.

North LRT construction also began in earnest in 2011 with a budget of approximately $150 million. The project reached a major milestone with the successful relocation of Kingsway. Traffic can now flow on Kingsway as the Kingsway/Royal Alex LRT Station is being built.

“The completion of so many road projects is helping Edmonton achieve its goal of a more efficient and sustainable transportation system,” says Boutilier. “While 2011 was an exceptional year we plan to continue pursuing this vision in 2012 by completing several projects – including Fort Road, 112 Avenue and the Whitemud/17 Street interchange – and continuing construction of the North LRT.”
