City of Edmonton Compost is available for bulk purchase. This compost is rich in organic matter and excellent for amending depleted soils. It enriches planting mixes and enhances the growth of turf, ornamental plants, vegetables and fruit trees.

In addition to improving organic matter and water retention, compost adds vital supplements to soils and stimulates growth. It is finely screened at 1/4”.

The City produces 3 different types of compost products that can be used for a variety of applications. These products meet CCME guidelines for compost quality.

The minimum purchase for bulk purchase or delivery is 2.6 tonnes (equivalent to 6 yards). Smaller amounts can be purchased at various Edmonton retailers.

Horticultural Compost

This compost is made from yard waste materials including leaves, twigs, branches, fallen fruit, grass and garden trimmings.

Benefits of Use
This compost is ideal for enhancing plant growth, improving soil organic matter, and soil porosity. Its low moisture makes it easy and light to work with, and it is safe to use on all soil types (lab-tested and weed-free).

Agricultural Compost

This compost product is made from food scraps, grass clippings and other organic materials collected through Edmonton’s curbside organics collections program.

Municipal Solid Waste Compost (MSW)

This compost product is manufactured from the residential food scraps material that is sorted from mixed apartment and condo waste and processed at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre.

Benefits of Use
This compost improves and stabilizes soil texture and increases carbon and nitrogen in the soil which leads to a higher biomass in land reclamation. It also allows quick and easy solidification of all types of slurry wastes.

Benefits of City of Edmonton Compost Products

Rich in supplements. City of Edmonton compost is a good source of nitrogen and other valuable supplements. Its slow-release characteristics mean long-lasting improvements to your soil, turf, lawn, flowerbeds and gardens.

Improves organic matter. It increases microbial activity, soil porosity and soil moisture retention. It’s also an excellent amendment for both sand-based and clay-based soils.

Pathogen free. The temperature reached during the City composting process eliminates weeds and pathogens in the raw material. This also produces a pleasant ‘earthy’ smell.

Low moisture. On average, City of Edmonton Compost contains less than 40% moisture. This means more supplements per tonne and a product that is light and easy to work with.

Safe for your soil. Our compost products are tested for herbicide residue and have a neutral pH level, which makes them safe to add to your soil.
