Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition

The Wasterwater Collection Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system utilizes networked servers and personal computers, cellular telecommunications and specialized software to monitor the operation of mechanical drainage facilities.  About 140 facilities are monitored, including pump stations, automatic flow control gates and valves, level sensors, odour filters, corrosion protection devices, a pollutant recovery facility and fountains.

SCADA, part of the Information Systems Management Plan, monitors the city-wide drainage system in real time and allows operators to reliably monitor processes from central and remote locations, including wireless computers in the field, by displaying alarms, statuses, control settings and performance histroy. In excess of 5,000 alarms and statuses are monitored.  

Assembly of the Wastewater Collection SCADA system was completed in early 2008. The system will be enhanced to improve operational effectiveness and efficiency and to facilitate operation of more complex drainage facilities required to meet the needs of higher environmental protection standards and increased demand for wastewater collection.
