Sewer Odours
While Edmonton's main trunk sewer pipes are located 30 to 60 metres underground, odours escape through manholes and catch basins, particularly during hot, dry weather. Sewer odour is unpleasant but is not a health hazard.
Collection System Odours
Sewer odours from the collection system are often caused by:
- Sediment built up in the pipe which can be solved by cleaning the sewers with high pressure flushing.
- Natural venting of deep sewers can be solved by installing flappers inside manholes to restrict the flow of odourous air to the outside. Other solutions are constructing air circulation shafts to reduce the escape of pressurized air or by forcing odourous air through a filter.

Mill Creek Ravine Sewer Odour Complaint
In order to tackle the problems caused by sewer odours in the Mill Creek Ravine area, Utility Services has installed two filtration devices; a carbon scrubber in the Bonnie Doon neighbourhood at Kenilworth Park in 2001, and a biofilter in the King Edward Park neighbourhood in 2002 with an upgrade in 2005.
