Preventing and Reporting Problems

To minimize flooding and environmental damage caused by system failures like blocked or collapsed lines, Drainage Operations regularly inspects, cleans and repairs pipes, pumping stations, storage facilities and other drainage structures. Bylaw enforcement and private line inspections limit the amount of contaminants and prohibited substances entering the drainage system. Drainage Operations will investigate sewer bylaw violations such as dumping chemicals, solid materials and other contaminants into the drainage system.

Thousands of water samples are taken and analyzed each year from outfalls, stormwater lakes and the treatment plant to ensure water quality meets health and environmental standards set by the provincial government. Weeds and algae growth in stormwater lakes are controlled through the use of approved chemicals and mechanical methods.

Other Drainage Operations activities include tree root control, public education programs and investigations into odour, blockages in residential sewer lines and other drainage complaints.
