Open Cut, Tunneling and Structures
Open Cut Construction
This group handles the installation of all trunk and lateral sewers, water mains and appurtenances, service connections, and telephone duct lines plus culverts and swales for overland drainage. The activities of this group range from the installation of water and sewer services to individual properties up to the laying of 2.1 m diameter concrete pipe for underground storage.
This group is expert at working where the proximity of other utilities and the constant threat of disruption to the general public makes careful planning and good communications an essential component of daily work.
Tunneling and Structures Construction
The main activity of this group is the construction of tunnels and deep shafts. The tunnels vary in size from 900 mm arch rib, excavated by hand, up to 6.25 m diameter, excavated by tunnel boring machine. The group has experience in all types of tunnel liners including cast-insitu concrete on arch ribs, concrete segments, and shotcrete. The tunnelling capabilities of the group are well known in the private sectors and regularly undertake difficult underground assignments for external customers. The group also constructs pump stations, storm sewer outfalls, deep shafts, and other miscellaneous concrete and blockwork structures.
This group is always well prepared to react immediately to any emergency situation that occurs in the City such as the collapse of roads due to the failure of sewer or water mains, or the threat of flooding following heavy rainfall. A rapid response by experienced personnel provides an essential safeguard for citizen's wellbeing.
