Planning Ahead

Planning Ahead for 2.1 Million Edmontonians

Artist rendering of proposed Blatchford development

In 50 years, Edmonton is forecast to have an astonishing 2.1 million people. It’s a crucial moment for the City of Edmonton to take confident and forward-thinking steps to plan for major growth. The status quo is no longer an option.

To accommodate the huge increase of newcomers and ensure a high quality-of-life, Edmonton will take a balanced approach by building up, in and out.

We Have a Plan: Building up, in and Out

We are building up. We can see this demonstrated by the new residential high-rise towers being built in the core and throughout the city.

Encouraging more higher density, transit oriented development like Century Park maximizes major infrastructure investments like our largescale transit and LRT network.

Building In

Building ‘in’ refers to both creating higher density, sustainable neighbourhoods such as Blatchford and the Quarters, as well as supporting smaller scale infill across our established neighbourhoods.

Edmonton is advancing efforts to significantly increase density in established neighbourhoods through encouraging narrow lots, more townhouses, garage and garden suites, and apartments.

Building Out

Building ‘out’ means ensuring our newest communities are significantly more compact and complete with housing, employment and services.

Edmonton’s newest communities have the highest suburban residential densities in the region. In the south, we are running out of land for commercial and industrial needs, as well as land to house new residents who are choosing Edmonton to live, work and raise their families. Ensuring a healthy land supply is a key priority for accommodating and managing sustainable growth.

Edmonton is rapidly growing and so is the region. Ultimately, it takes a collaborative effort to accommodate growth.

Edmonton gets it. We’re on it.
