Core Courses
Land Use Planning: The Big Picture (3 hours - $25)
The course addresses questions about how communities have historically planned their cities and developed their land and the history of Edmonton's planning and development. In this course you will learn about urban planning, how planners accommodate the interests and values of the community and how they weigh a wide variety of interests for the common good.
Getting a Grip on Land Use Planning (6 hours - $35)
This course explains the planning process, how land is developed, and how it is zoned. The courses explain the laws that govern land use planning, where they come from and what they do. Learning about the rules and regulations governing planning provides insight into how and why City Council and planners practice planning. You will see how planners implement regulations to manage development in Edmonton. You will learn about zoning and the roles, rights and interests of the various stakeholders in the zoning of land and in other community planning processes.
Come Plan with Us: Using your Voice (6 hours - $35)
Come Plan with Us outlines how you can get involved in the planning process to demonstrate your support or opposition for development projects. The course explains the notices the city provides and your options for participation. To help you maximize the impact of your participation, you will learn tips from the Councillors on how to make effective presentation to Council and will be given an opportunity to practice what you have learned.
Elective Courses
Infill (3 hours - $35)
Recommended Prerequisite: Course 2 - Getting A Grip On Land Use Planning
This course, part of Action 9 in the Infill Roadmap, will help participants understand the planning process and provide a platform for discussion about infill in Edmonton. You will learn about what residential infill means in both the North American and the Edmonton context, and how infill supports the City's sustainability goals. You will also be connected with tools and resources to understand how to effectively implement infill in the City of Edmonton.
Transportation Planning (6 hours - $35)
The Transportation elective provides a broad look at transportation planning in Edmonton. Learn the basics of how modern transportation network components fit together, the City's structure to plan this network, and how Edmonton integrates transportation into the rest of its planning processes. Participants will identify opportunities to participate in planning Edmonton's transportation network.
Urban Design (6 hours - $35)
This course includes an outdoor walking tour; please dress appropriately. Check the Environment Canada weather forecast.
The Urban Design elective explains urban design, why urban design is important and the impact that urban design has on you and your community. You will see examples of how urban design has been incorporated into development in Edmonton and other cities. You will learn how to work with developers and planners to have urban design considerations included in the development of your community.
Transit Oriented Development (3 hours - $35)
The Transit Oriented Development elective will educate the community, the development industry, city administration and officials about Transit Oriented Development, its key features and benefits and the principles of Transit Oriented Development planning. As you build your own Transit Oriented Development in interactive group activities, you will have the opportunity to apply the principles you learn in the course.
