Home Energy Labelling
The City of Edmonton is currently developing a New and Existing Home Energy Labelling Program.
As part of Edmonton’s Green Building Plan, the City has conducted ongoing consultation and feedback related to the program. The City is currently seeking further information from citizens, various community leagues, real estate agents, energy advisors and home builder representatives until the end of 2013.
The goal is to develop a Voluntary Home Energy Labelling Program Plan and Implementation Plan.
On June 20, 2012, Edmonton City Council supported the development of a New and Existing Home Energy Labelling program, as outlined in the Green Building Plan. The Green Building Plan proposes the development of a voluntary program with linkage to the real estate Multiple Listing Service and also suggests that a voluntary program would transition to mandatory labelling in the future.
For more details on the project, read the fact sheet. Continue checking this webpage for updates as the program is developed.
Why have energy labels?
Energy Labels provide home owners and potential home buyers with information on the home’s energy performance and by extension the energy costs.
A more energy efficient home:
- Saves you money
- Reduces carbon pollution
EnerGuide: Canada’s Energy Rating and Labelling System
EnerGuide is Canada’s energy rating and labelling system that certifies the energy efficiency of products and homes (new and existing). The EnerGuide rating allows you to easily compare the advantages of an energy-efficient major household appliance (dishwasher, furnace, etc.) to see how it measures up against the range of products sold in Canada. EnerGuide also provides a standard measure of your home’s energy performance. The EnerGuide label shows you (and future buyers) exactly how energy-efficient your home is and allows you to compare the energy efficiency of your home with similar homes in your neighbourhood and across Canada.
More information on EnerGuide Rating Systems for homes is available in Edmonton’s Green Home Guide.
