Historic Designation Process
Step 1
Building is NOT on The Register of Historic Resources in Edmonton
Complete Application to Amend the register of historic resources in Edmonton. The Heritage Planner prepares a report for the Edmonton Historic Board's Historic Resources Review Panel. The Panel reviews the application to determine if the resource qualifies. If it qualifies, their recommendation is taken to the General Manager of Sustainable Development, who makes the final decision. At this point it is usually added to the Register as an A or B listed Resource.
Step 2
Building is already on The Register or has just been put on it
- Complete the Application for Designation as a Municipal Historic Resource and submit it to the Heritage Planner, Sustainable Development.
- If supported, the Heritage Planner will prepare reports, determine grant levels, schedules and agreements that will be forwarded for approval by City Council. Process takes approximately 3-4 months.
Step 3
Notice of Intention to Designate is Issued
City Council issues a notice that it intends to pass a Bylaw to designate the building and gives 60 days for any comments or objections.
Step 4
City passes a Bylaw legally designating the building as a Municipal Historic Resource
- City Council will only pass the Bylaw once the owner has agreed to sign a Maintenance and Rehabilitation agreement and rezone the property to DC1. This secures the funding and the legal protection of the building.
- A Zoning Bylaw Amendment Application is also required for rezoning.
