Growth and the Future
Growth and the Future: Ultimately We’re All in This Together

Our Region is Growing Faster than Ever
Edmonton is growing fast. In just two years, Edmonton has grown by 7.4% or more than 60,000 people. That’s 82 people moving to Edmonton every day. To put that in perspective, effectively from 2012, we have grown almost the size of a city like St. Albert.
This is Big
Edmonton is now a major, large city in the fastest-growing region in the fastest-growing province. It continues to attract top talent, and importantly keep the younger people who—until recently—would leave to one of the other major Canadian cities.
In fact, the largest age group in the city is 20-39, greatly outnumbering their parents, the baby-boomers.
With Tremendous Growth Comes Opportunity
For people in the Edmonton Region, this means more employment choices than ever. Growth brings new retailers, restaurants, and festivals—projects that enhance the region and add vibrancy. And, this momentum strengthens the economy, making it less vulnerable to external shocks.
Fast-paced Growth has Implications for our Everyday Lives
Potentially higher housing prices, traffic jams, dodging elbows in the swim lane, these can be part of the reality that we in the region are experiencing.
How can a Municipality Manage Growth Without Sacrificing Quality of Life?
The answer comes from responsible and forward-thinking planning. It requires a dedication to the responsible development of land to house newcomers, support industrial and commercial investment attraction and collectively lift the entire region.
The Edmonton Region is an exciting, growing region. It is the job of municipalities to ensure challenges are met and opportunities are capitalized by working together.
Edmonton gets it. We’re on it.
