Annexation Process
Annexation is the process of changing the boundaries between one or more municipalities.
The Province of Alberta outlines a process for annexation in the Municipal Government Act.
The annexation process involves negotiations between local governments and public engagement. It also involves a formal review by the Municipal Government Board, and a final decision by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
The process can take two to five years to complete.
The Negotiating Committee
A key part of the annexation process is the appointment of a negotiating committee by each of the affected municipalities.
Edmonton City Council approved an annexation negotiating committee that includes Mayor Don Iveson and Councillors Bryan Anderson, Ed Gibbons, and Michael Walters.
The Municipal Government Board expects that affected municipalities will negotiate to find agreement on the terms of the annexation.
