Annexation and Regional Planning Maps

Edmonton is proposing to annex two areas of land south of its boundary at 41 Ave SW, east and west of QEII Highway.

This overview map shows the two annexation areas and their relation to Edmonton and neighbouring communities.

The history of annexation map shows how Edmonton has grown since 1892.

Southwest Lands

The southwest annexation area includes land in Leduc County and the Edmonton International Airport totalling approximately 12,050 hectares.

By including the international airport in the annexation, Edmonton will be able to seamlessly integrate infrastructure and services (such as arterial roads, mass transit and drainage) for future development surrounding the airport.

Southeast Lands

The southeast annexation area is approximately 3,900 hectares and includes land from Leduc County and three kilometre strip of land along 50th Street/Highway 814 that is part of the Town of Beaumont.

On April 14, 2015, Edmonton City Council approved a minor update to its notice of intent to annex additional lands east of the QEII Highway. Four quarter sections (approximately 260 hectares) of land were added to the original proposal bringing the proposed southeast annexation area from 3,625 hectares to 3,945 hectares.

Priority Growth Areas

The Capital Region Board (CRB) has developed a Growth Plan that identifies certain areas that are targeted for development. These areas are called Priority Growth Areas (PGA). The majority of the land in the proposed annexation area is designated as a Priority Growth Area and is intended to be developed as per the CRB Growth Plan. This map shows the areas designated for urban growth in the proposed annexation area.

PGAs were created to increase densities to concentrate growth, use infrastructure and land more efficiently. Check out the CRB Fact Sheet on PGAs.
