Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium Redevelopment
The Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium, located in Coronation Park, is a landmark of city-wide importance. The City is looking to renew this landmark building and will be partnering with TELUS World of Science - Edmonton to provide programming and facility rental services once the building has been restored.

Project Overview
The Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium, located in Coronation Park, is a landmark of city-wide importance given its long-standing community role, unique high quality design and historical associations. As the first planetarium in Canada, the building also holds national significance.
The renewal and restoration will support the preservation of this architectural icon and renew the building's identity and purpose. The planetarium project also supports the Coronation Park Master Plan by reactivating and enhancing the centre of the park.
Partnership with TELUS World of Science - Edmonton
The Coronation District Park Master Plan identifies Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium as an important element in the centre of the park that is intended to provide a community gathering place. One portion of the building will become park washrooms accessible to the public during park hours. The other part of the building will be leased to TELUS World of Science Edmonton to support their public programs and events. Through a long-standing partnership with TELUS World of Science - Edmonton, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Edmonton Centre, will also host events and programs at the Planetarium.
Historical Designation
The intent of the rehabilitation is to honour the heritage, historical and architectural importance of the original exterior structure, while increasing the functionality of the interior. The project is seeking designation as a Municipal Heritage Resource as the Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium was the first planetarium in Canada, opening its doors in the fall of 1960.
Updated Design
Together with TELUS World of Science - Edmonton and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, we have developed a schematic design that is intended to serve park users as a park washroom, and to serve the public through TELUS World of Science - Edmonton’s, and Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Edmonton Centre’s programs and services.
