Where We Started
Creating the plan was a two-and-a-half year endeavour that required balancing community input with existing City policy, and technical studies.
In 2009 City Council endorsed a Revitalization Strategy for Jasper Place and Urban Design Vision for Stony Plain Road, which were developed through collaboration with the local communities. The ARP process provided an opportunity to develop a local strategy for implementing city-wide policies that recognized local aspirations as set out in the Revitalization Strategy. The most relevant city policies are outlined below.
Edmonton’s Strategic Plan, The Way Ahead, has established a vision of a more compact, sustainable and livable city. The ELEVATE report, developed by the Community Sustainability Task Force, has also articulated a vision for strong, diverse and sustainable neighbourhoods that provide an environment where Edmontonians can live, learn, work and play, now and in the future.
In support of these visions, Edmonton’s Municipal Development Plan, The Way We Grow, directs that a greater portion of new growth occur within the City’s mature and established neighbourhoods and that medium to higher density residential, employment and retail development be focused around LRT and Transit Centre stations.
The City developed a number of key policies to support these objectives, including the Residential Infill Guidelines and the Transit Oriented Development Guidelines.
