Heritage Interpretive Plan

Heritage Interpretive Plan City of Edmonton Archives EA 160-1586

The River Crossing area is a place that is historically and culturally significant for many people, including Indigenous communities, Edmontonians and Albertans.

The River Crossing project is a chance to build on this significance, and to bring together people and planning activities related to the future of the area. It is also a chance to identify how to guide change in ways that honour the history and cultural importance of the area, and to create a new shared story for the future.

The City of Edmonton is taking a number of actions to bring the vision for River Crossing to life. One of these actions will be the creation of a Heritage Interpretive Plan, which will involve engaging with the public, Indigenous communities and other key stakeholders. The Heritage Interpretive Plan will help define the identity of the area through stories that honour the area’s history. It will also help guide how these stories are told and shared in the area as it changes over time.

The Heritage Interpretive Plan will consider how to interpret the heritage of the River Crossing area over time, and through different urban features and development scales.

In addition to guiding how the area’s past is carried forward and celebrated into the future, the Heritage Interpretive Plan will serve as one of many cornerstones in the development of the Business Plan.

Timeline and Next Steps

The Heritage Interpretive Plan is currently in a project planning phase.

Public engagement will be carried out in the second half of 2016.

A final Heritage Interpretive Plan is anticipated in early 2017.
