Reports & Presentations

Since the Katz Group first submitted a rezoning application with the City for a downtown sports and entertainment facility in April 2010, there have been four meetings of City Council to discuss various aspects of the proposal.

The minutes of the meetings, including any motions by City Council, written reports that were submitted to those meetings, as well as archival video footage of the meetings, are available as part of the Council minutes for those meetings. 

The first meeting was on July 21, 2010, which featured a presentation by Darryl Katz, owner of the Edmonton Oilers.

The second meeting was on December 10, 2010; the third was on January 17, 2011; the fourth was a Public Hearing on January 18, 2011.   

January 18, 2011 - Statutory Public Hearing

• A statutory public hearing was held on a rezoning application for the land (north of 104 Avenue and west of 101 Street) proposed by the Katz Group for an arena. Following the meeting, Council approved rezoning the land.

January 17, 2011 - Council meeting highlights

• A business model framework for the financing and operating of a downtown sports and entertainment facility, including the benefits and risks of a Community Revitalization Levy.
• An assessment of the potential impacts on City operations, infrastructure and investments of a new downtown sports and entertainment facility.
• An assessment of the potential impacts of a new sports and entertainment facility on Edmonton Northlands and the future of Rexall Place.
• A final report on the public consultation held in November 2010 including an analysis of the 28,000 responses to an online questionnaire, and a report on a statistically valid telephone survey that asked Edmontonians their views on a potential downtown arena.

December 10, 2010 - Council meeting highlights

• A presentation by Northlands.
• The responses to the questions asked by the mayor and councillors about a potential downtown arena. The questions were posed by City Council during the July 21, 2010 Council meeting, which also featured a presentation by the Katz Group, owners of the Edmonton Oilers.
• A verbal briefing on the initial analysis done to date of the City’s public consultation (information sessions and online questionnaire) held in November.
