Expanding and improving Edmonton's parks and facilities involves ongoing long-term planning. Several plans and strategies make up the framework that responds to the City of Edmonton's future park and facility needs.

Recreation Facility Master Plan
The Recreation Facility Master Plan 2005-2015, approved in 2004, provides a strategic vision and action plan for meeting recreation, leisure, and cultural facility needs.
In 2010, a five-year review of the plan was conducted to ensure that the strategic direction was still relevant and to ensure that the plan was still meeting community needs.

Artificial Turf Plan
The Artificial Turf Plan is intended to assist the City in identifying the short and mid-term rectangular artificial turf field locations and field design recommendations.

The 10-Year Gymnasium Strategy (2013-2023) was developed to help guide the best use and future operational planning of all City of Edmonton gymnasiums.

Medium Size Stadium Strategy
The Medium Size Stadium Strategy defines the triggers for development, the capital requirements, and operating and potential business models, of a new outdoor stadium venue that includes 5,000 to 10,000 seats with an artificial rectangular turf field.

10-year Arena Capital Development Strategy
The 10-year Arena Capital Development Strategy (2009-2019) identifies long-term arena capital investment needs, to help the City continue to provide quality arena experiences and to meet the needs of the city's growing population.
Parks & River Valley
Urban Parks Management Plan
The Urban Parks Management Plan (2006-2016) guides the acquisition, development, maintenance, preservation and use of parkland and provides strategic direction for all river valley and ravine parkland as well as all school and park sites outside the river valley.
Ribbon of Green Concept & Master Plan
The Ribbon of Green Concept Plan considers the North Saskatchewan River Valley and Ravine System. The plans aim is to establish publicly supported goals for the development and management of our Ribbon of Green.

The Buena Vista / Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park Master Plan strives to increase opportunities to experience and enjoy the park while preserving and enhancing the ecological systems.

Terwillegar Park Concept Plan
The Terwillegar Park Concept Plan provides an overall concept plan and development guidelines for Terwillegar Park. The approved vision for the park is "A Unique Natural Park within the City of Edmonton's River Valley Park System."
District Park Master Plans
District parks are busy, active sites and are the primary sites for regulation-sized, bookable sports fields, high schools and major recreation centres (e.g., arena/pool/ fitness centre complexes, etc.). Pools & Water Features
The Outdoor Aquatic Strategy governs the development of spray decks and parks, outdoor pools, fountains, and interactive play structures.
Seniors' Centres
The Seniors' Centres Plan for Edmonton provides future direction over the next 10 years on capital requirements of existing centres and recommendations to address seniors' needs for new facilities.
Attractions
The 2010 Master Plan Update is a companion document to the original Master Plans approved by City Council in 1968 and updated in 1988 and 2001. The 2010 Master Plan updates the vision for Fort Edmonton Park and provides direction on capital development, animation, and related activities.
Cemeteries
The goal of the Municipal Cemeteries Master Plan is to prepare a comprehensive long range plan illustrating municipal cemeteries’ initiatives that will align with Department priorities and community needs.
