Master Composter Recycler program marks 20th anniversary

After Sean Ward graduated from the City of Edmonton’s Master Composter Recycler program he was so passionate he brought composting to his work – at the Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan.

“I’ve always been interested in composting and this was a way to further develop a passion, contribute to the community and get other people involved,” said Ward. “The most rewarding part is helping people reduce their carbon footprint.”

The City of Edmonton is recognizing the 661 volunteers who have graduated from the program, which is now celebrating its 20th anniversary. In total, the graduates have given 35,000 hours of their time educating people on green waste management practices. They work trade shows, act as compost “doctors”, give community and school presentations, and help friends and neighbours start composting.

“Master Composter Recycler volunteers are integral to the success of our world-renowned waste management system,” says Councillor Kim Krushell. “They have educated thousands of Edmontonians on how to be green. On behalf of the City, I thank them for their hard work and dedication.”

The Waste Management Branch hosts the Master Composter Recycler training program once a year. The next Master Composter Recycler course will be offered April 2011, and applications are accepted year-round.
