Updated Rules for Campaign Funding Disclosure
May 13, 2010
The latest information about the requirements for disclosure of campaign funds is now available for candidates for the October 18, 2010 Edmonton election.
On April 22, 2010, the Province of Alberta amended the Local Authorities Election Act, which affects municipal campaign financing and disclosure. School board candidates are not subject to these rules.
Alberta Municipal Affairs has information on campaign financing and disclosure in Running for Municipal Office in Alberta: A Candidate's Guide.
The legislation contains provisions about campaign contributions, accounting obligations, surplus campaign fund requirements, and rules about who cannot contribute to a campaign and campaign funding limits.
The provisions refer to:
- Contributions
- Contributors
- Contribution Limits
- Accounting Responsibilities and Obligations
- Surplus Campaign Funds
- Self Funded Campaigns
Candidates can email questions or comments about the new campaign financing and disclosure rules to the City of Edmonton at elections@edmonton.ca.
The Election Office will be arranging some noon hour sessions during the month of August to answer candidate’s election related questions. Watch for updates at www.edmonton.ca/election.
