Trains Start to Test South LRT Extension Tracks
March 25, 2010
Public needs to be aware and stay safe.
The South LRT Extension will mark many firsts for Edmonton – among them the first tracks down the middle of a street. With trains now testing this configuration, the City of Edmonton wants to remind citizens about how to stay safe around the South LRT.
“Public safety is our top priority,” said Graeme McElheran, Communications Officer for LRT Design & Construction. “Trains are rolling, so people need to be patient and aware, look both ways for trains and never stop on the tracks.”
The City is launching a public safety awareness campaign for all travellers of the South LRT corridor on 111th Street, which includes:
- Brochure – South LRT Safety for Motorists & Pedestrians
- Safety video – SLRT Safety
- Intersection graphics for 111th Street from 23rd Avenue to 61st Avenue
- Newsletter – Making Tracks Spring 2010
- Transforming Edmonton blog post – South LRT in the Corner of the Eye
These safety tools complement the City’s TraXSafe program, which provides information materials and community outreach presentations about how to stay safe around LRT. TraXSafe details and components of the South LRT safety campaign are available at available at www.edmonton.ca/traxsafe.
The Grand Opening of the South LRT Extension to Southgate and Century Park is scheduled for Saturday, April 24th 2010. The first day of LRT operations on the South LRT is Sunday, April 25th 2010.
