Survey Says…People Want More Activity on Jasper Ave.

August 03, 2010

Quality dining, nightclubs, live music and theatre attract people to Jasper Ave.

Patrons, visitors, residents and businesses on Jasper Avenue want more for people to do in the area, according to a survey of 1,500 people. The survey was conducted by the City-led Responsible Hospitality Edmonton and the associated Jasper Avenue Entertainment Working Group from July 8-10 on Jasper Avenue and July 1-16 online.

People also said that well-lit sidewalks, alleys and parking lots, and lots of people on the street and open businesses were necessary contributors for making a place feel safe and diversifying the late night options would enhance the experience for people coming to the area.

The responses will be used to develop recommendations for City Council on enhancing the vibrancy and safety of the area.

Cindy Davies, project manager for the working group, says the City has already begun to lay the groundwork for a safer and more vibrant downtown.

“The City created the Jasper Avenue Entertainment Working Group to focus on issues related to the Jasper Avenue nighttime entertainment districts. This team will develop comprehensive recommendations to support the development and maintenance of a vibrant area that balances the needs of the local businesses, residents, visitors and nighttime entertainment patrons.”

The working group, formed earlier this year, consists of community residents, local businesses, developers, the hospitality industry, education, patrons as well as government agencies, enforcement and City departments.

In 2006 the City of Edmonton established Responsible Hospitality Edmonton to promote a safe, thriving, late-night environment while mitigating impact on the community. Two Responsible Hospitality Edmonton programs – the Public Safety Compliance Team and Street as a Venue on Whyte – are now being modelled by other cities across North America. Other Responsible Hospitality programs include public washrooms and Save the Party education campaign for bar patrons.

These Responsible Hospitality Edmonton projects are being used as a model for the efforts now underway downtown.
