Simon Farbrother Begins as Edmonton’s New City Manager
January 18, 2010
Edmonton’s first new City Manager in 10 years begins work today, as Simon Farbrother takes on the senior position at the head of the City of Edmonton Corporation.
“I appreciate that Edmonton is a city that’s not only thinking about its future, but actually preparing for it,” Farbrother says. “Edmonton has a vision. It knows the type of city it wants to become. That’s tremendously motivating and very exciting.”
The City Manager reports directly to City Council. Mr. Farbrother heads a team of more than 10,000 who deliver a wide range of municipal services to Edmontonians. He manages a combined operating and capital budget of nearly $3 billion.
Mr. Farbrother says his key deliverable is a City that continues to work for its citizens and his goal is to take Edmonton to the next level. “The City of Edmonton is a municipal leader in so many areas including waste management, infrastructure planning, event management and volunteerism,” he says. “We need to balance what is required for today, with an understanding of the long-term implications for the future and our vision for where we want to go.”
He goes on to say, “There is a sense of destiny in Edmonton. We are taking on bold challenges. The spirit and pride evident during the Olympic Torch Relay in Edmonton provided a glimpse into what we can build if we all work together.”
Simon Farbrother was most recently the City Manager of Waterloo, Ontario and is currently International Vice President of the International City-County Managers Association.
