Northwest LRT Route Recommendation
May 19, 2010
The City of Edmonton has completed the evaluation for the northwest LRT extension from the planned NAIT station to the northwest city limits.
“This process involved significant technical evaluation and public consultation,” says Adam Laughlin, Director, Facility and Capital Planning. “After careful examination, we recommend the 113A Street Corridor, using 153 Avenue, because it maximizes ridership and connections to communities in northwest Edmonton.”
According to this recommendation, the LRT would travel from NAIT northwest through the City Centre Airport lands, over or under Yellowhead Trail and the CN railyard, north on 113A Street, then turning West on 153 Avenue to a future park and ride site planned at northwest city limits.
“This proposed LRT extension will change the way people use the transportation system. To facilitate this transition, we will continue to work closely with all the stakeholders, including the City of St. Albert, who has been a partner in the study. The route is designed to accommodate a potential future extension into the City of St. Albert which is consistent with St. Albert’s transportation plans and the Capital Region Board’s transit plans.”
This route recommendation will be considered by City Council following a Statutory Public Hearing on June 22. City Council will make the ultimate decision whether the recommendation will be approved.
In preparation for the public hearing, public consultation will continue. Information sessions will be held on June 9 and 10 to share more details on the evaluation process and the recommended corridor.
