Nationally Recognized Urban Planners to Complete Edmonton’s New Downtown Plan
January 19, 2010
An impressive team of city planners, urban designers, architects, transportation planners and landscape architects has been hired to complete the Capital City Downtown Plan.
The Livable City Design group, formed by Cohos Evamy integratedesign, an Edmonton based leading national multidisciplinary design team, has been awarded the $400,000 contract.
The group is made up of nationally recognized designers and planners from Vancouver and Edmonton, including: HB Lanarc, Urban Plans Consulting, Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden, Carlyle + Associates, ISL Engineering and Land Services and Cohos Evamy integratedesign. In addition, Steer Davies Gleave consultants will provide expertise on LRT route alignment and related design elements. The group will also draw upon the expertise of internationally known specialists in the areas of sports arena planning (NBBJ) and land economics (GP Rollo & Associates).
“This is a talented team of experts coming together with the City to take the Plan to a new level,” says Peter Ohm, Manager of the City’s Planning and Policy Branch. “We want the Plan to renew the vision for downtown through up-to-date and competitive strategies and policies that will guide development for the next 10 to 15 years.”
The group will draw on three years of extensive public consultations to finalize the Downtown Plan. They will work with City planners and a Downtown Plan Advisory Committee to identify and test the policies and zoning required to make the Plan work.
The new Plan will include details on LRT routes and future stations in and out of downtown, land uses for each of the five unique districts that make up the downtown, improved requirements for streetscapes and building design, more housing options and the inclusion of more parks and open spaces.
The Livable City Design group will prepare materials for public open houses in the spring, with the final Capital City Downtown Plan going to City Council in the Summer of 2010. The goal is to create a Plan that will guide the transformation of the downtown into a more vibrant, attractive, high density, mixed use and walkable area.
