Major Road Projects on Track for Completion
August 17, 2011
Despite frequent rainfalls during the 2011 construction season, all major road projects in Edmonton are on schedule to be finished this fall.
“We’ve made excellent progress on all our major road projects in spite of wet weather,” says Mayor Stephen Mandel. “Congratulations to Transportation Services staff, whose flexibility and hard work have kept us on schedule to re-open several major roadways over the next three months.”
Major roadways scheduled to open this fall include the following:
- 23 Avenue/Gateway Boulevard Interchange – September
- Quesnell Bridge/Whitemud Drive – September
- Kingsway – October
- Scona Road/99 Street – November
The City budgeted $285 million for transportation projects for the 2011 construction season. Of 245 transportation projects the City originally hoped to finish this year, approximately 190 – roughly 80 percent – are expected to meet their completion targets, weather permitting.
“We are hoping the weather cooperates to allow us to meet this aggressive schedule,” says Transportation Services General Manager Bob Boutilier. “City staff and our private sector partners have been working overtime and weekends, whenever the weather has been dry, to keep us on schedule so far.
“We appreciate everyone’s hard work on Edmonton’s roads this year, and thank motorists and their families for their patience as we continue to enhance the way we move in Edmonton.”
