Lewis Farms Transit Centre Officially Opens

June 08, 2011

Enhancing the commute for West End residents

The City of Edmonton has officially opened the Lewis Farms Transit Centre on 1021 Webber Greens Drive, adding another facility to enhance transit convenience.
The new park-and-ride lot with over 600 spaces is ideal for commuters in west Edmonton and from nearby municipalities traveling into the downtown core.

“This new transit centre is part of the City’s long-range plan to encourage people to take public transit,” said Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel. “The large park-and-ride site makes it even more convenient for people to take the bus.”

The transit centre, costing just over $13 million, received approximately one-third of its funding from the Canada-Alberta Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (CAMRIF).
“Today’s official opening is a reflection of our Government’s commitment towards building stronger and more vibrant communities,” said Rona Ambrose, Government of Canada Minister of Public Works and Government Services. “This new centre in Lewis Estates boosts Edmonton’s transit infrastructure by providing residents with improved public transportation opportunities to travel across the city.”

Hector Goudreau, Alberta Minister of Municipal Affairs, praised the partnership that made this project possible. “This project is an excellent example of what can happen when all three levels of government work together to invest in municipal infrastructure,” said Goudreau. “This new transit centre will serve Edmontonians today and into the future while making Edmonton even more accessible, and promoting environmentally friendly travel.”

The building is designed to complement surrounding neighbourhoods and features visible wood and beams with clear glass walls. The centre has a public washroom, seating area, 14 bus bays, as well as security cameras and emergency phones to provide a safe and comfortable environment.

A more convenient transit system helps shift transportation modes away from single-occupant vehicles for commuters, which reduces air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, helps commuters reduce costs and extends the life of road infrastructure.
