I Want to Ride My Bicycle
August 04, 2011
Edmontonians will soon be able to cycle on new on-street bicycle routes. Over 12 kilometers of new routes are now ready for cyclists, and the remaining 6 kilometers are expected to be complete by September 2011.
“The project is part of a larger plan to install close to 500 kilometers of on-street cycling facilities within the next 10 to 20 years,” says Andrew Siggelkow, transportation engineer. “As a city, we want to encourage cycling as a sustainable transportation option. Cycling is inexpensive, healthy and environmentally friendly.”
During and after construction, the City of Edmonton encourages cyclists and motorists to be courteous, follow the rules of the road and watch out for each other.
“It’s important that motorists don’t drive or stop in the bicycle lanes and obey speed limits. We also want to remind cyclists to keep a distance from parked cars and be predictable,” says Siggelkow.
Detailed project information is available online.
The bicycle lane symbols, sharrow symbols and maps of the new routes can be found on the City of Edmonton photo gallery.
