Edmonton’s City Auditor Earns Top Marks in External Audit
March 01, 2011
Edmonton’s Office of the City Auditor (OCA) achieved the highest rankings in all areas in an external quality assessment audit conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. The audit looked at compliance with the standards of the Institute of Internal Auditors and compared the Edmonton office to leading practices in public and private sector organizations.
“Edmontonians need to be confident in our ability to work independently, using the best practices,” says City Auditor David Wiun, who requested the independent assessment. “This external audit gives Council and citizens assurance that our work is thorough and we add value to City services.”
The PricewaterhouseCoopers report noted that the OCA maintains independence and objectivity, and pursues continuous improvement. It also made recommendations on how the OCA can further incorporate leading audit practices.
“As professional auditors we believe in the value of external reviews,” Wiun says. “We work with a philosophy of accountability and transparency, so it was important to us to seek a third-party opinion of our work.”
The City Auditor reports directly to City Council, and his office has a budgeted staff of 14 people.
