Edmonton Marks Successful Earth Hour 2010

March 28, 2010

Edmontonians have demonstrated their environmental interest through greater participation and a 3 per cent reduction in energy consumption during Earth Hour 2010 - the 60 minute lights-out event sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund.

According to EPCOR, power consumption in Edmonton during Earth Hour dropped 3 per cent from 8:30-9:30pm on March 27. While this is a smaller decrease in consumption over last year, the City is pleased with the growing participation in Earth Hour by individuals and businesses.

“Interest in Earth Hour is growing in Edmonton,” says Councillor Ben Henderson who helped Steinhauer Elementary School Grade 1 student Kritika Pandya switch off the City Hall lights last night. “It’s great to see so many people taking action to reduce their impact on the environment and teaching their children about the importance of making smart energy choices.”

Over 350 people also filled the City Hall plaza to enjoy a family-friendly Earth Hour celebration and watch the city skyline go dark. This is a sharp increase from last year when about 200 people took part the Earth Hour celebration downtown

The City of Edmonton turned off all non-essential lighting in three downtown office towers -- City Hall, Chancery Hall and Century Place -- and in as many other city facilities as practically possible. The participation rate among private buildings and businesses grew this year as well with over 28 facilities registering their participation on the City’s Earth Hour web page www.edmonton.ca/earthhour.
