Edmonton Makes History in Naming Historian Laureate
April 14, 2010
History has always been Ken Tingley’s passion. Now Tingley gets to put that passion to practice as the City of Edmonton’s first Historian Laureate. He assumes the role on April 14, 2010.
“I am honored that the City of Edmonton has chosen me as Historian Laureate,” said Tingley. “Edmonton may be a relatively young city, but it has packed a lot in. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share this history with others.”
Edmonton is the first municipality in Canada to appoint a Historian Laureate.
Tingley has spent nearly four decades working as a public historian in Edmonton. He started as a researcher at Fort Edmonton Park in 1973, helping to recreate 1885 Street at the historic park. From Edmonton’s aviation history to its heritage buildings, Tingley has developed a vast knowledge of Edmonton’s history.
“Edmonton has its own history to tell. There is diversity in Edmonton’s history culturally, ethnically and geographically,” said Tim Marriott, chair of the Edmonton Historical Board. “Ken knows this history well and is eminently qualified to serve as Historian Laureate. I look forward to working with him in his new role.”
“This is very exciting for the City of Edmonton,” said Mayor Stephen Mandel. “We’re a relatively young city and in recent years, we, as a community, have reached a greater appreciation for the importance of our architectural history. Identifying and preserving our heritage has become a greater priority to the City of Edmonton. A Historian Laureate gives us another way to bring the city’s history alive. I know Ken Tingley will do Edmonton proud.”
In addition to his work as a researcher and writer, Tingley has been actively involved with the Edmonton and District Historical Society, Old Strathcona Foundation, Edmonton Historical Board and other local museums and heritage groups as a board member, volunteer and supporter.
Tingley was born in Moncton, New Brunswick. He has lived in Edmonton since 1956.
Ken Tingley will serve a two-year term as Edmonton’s Historian Laureate.
