Edmonton Honours Outstanding Achievements in Arts and Culture, Community Service, and Sports

More than 100 Edmontonians were recognized with Salute to Excellence Citation and Performance Awards for their remarkable accomplishments in the areas of arts and culture, community service, and sports.
“The City of Edmonton is proud every year to honour the remarkable individuals whose achievements and dedication help to make Edmonton a truly amazing place to call home,” said Mayor Stephen Mandel. “This is a celebration of a lot of talent and hard work. What these people have done, and the leadership they have shown, is an inspiration to all of us.”
Citation Awards
Citation Awards honour individuals or groups who have given more than five years of distinguished service as volunteers and have been inspirational leaders in the areas of arts and culture, sports and community service.
Arts and Culture
- Ida Banks – writer, producer, performer and founder of Banks Associated Music.
- Craig Magill – teacher, volunteer and jazz musician. (posthumous award)
Community Service
- Robert Bentley – Co-chair of the Prostate Cancer Research Chair campaign and former chair of the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
- Gita Das – psychologist, writer and former president of the Intercultural Action Committee for the Advancement of Women.
- Mike Zouhri – humanitarian and president/founder of Action ALS. (ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.)
Sports
- Darcy Berger – firefighter/paramedic and touch football coach and mentor.
Performance Awards
Performance Awards honour individuals who have gained outstanding recognition at the national or international level.
Arts and Culture
- Marie Anne McLean – storyteller with the Alberta League Encouraging Storytelling (TALES) and one of seven Canadians selected for the national StorySave Project.
Sports
Sports performance awards were presented to 188 athletes and coaches. Some notable winners included the Kevin Martin curling team who won gold and the Cheryl Bernard curling team who won silver at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
