Edmonton Continues to Get High Marks as a Sustainable City
February 03, 2010
The City of Edmonton is the second most sustainable large city in Canada and the third most sustainable city overall according to the fourth-annual Corporate Knights Magazine Most Sustainable Cities in Canada list.
“The City of Edmonton is very pleased to continue to be recognized among the most sustainable cities in Canada,” says Mark Brostrom, Director, Office of Environment. “The participation of our citizens is a key reason for our success. Although we’ve moved down the list, Edmonton still leads in many environmental areas and we are pleased to see so many other cities working towards the goal of sustainability. If this were a contest, we would all be winners.”
Edmonton ranked 1st out of 17 overall in 2009. Toronto now tops the big cities ranking and Vancouver tops the list as the most sustainable city overall. The comprehensive ranking identifies Canadian cities whose practices leave the smallest environmental footprint possible and create a healthy, thriving population. A city’s sustainability is decided on five factors: ecological integrity, economic security, governance and empowerment, infrastructure and the built environment and social well-being.
