Edmonton City Councillors Take On Special Initiatives

March 09, 2011

Mayor Stephen Mandel has announced the Special Initiative assignments accepted by Councillors for the 2011-2013 City Council term. Special Initiatives have been an effective means to fast-track important issues for the past two terms, and ensure that all members of Council are given an opportunity to show leadership in areas of particular interest.

“Over the past two terms, we have seen the Council Initiatives strategy to be a very effective way of engaging Councillors and bringing focus to the issues that Edmontonians tell us are priorities,” said Mayor Stephen Mandel. “I am once again confident that we will see great results from having Councillors work closely with Administration and citizens on these important items. We have a strong Council, and I am excited about what we are going to accomplish this term.”

The Special Initiatives for this term cover a wide-range of issues from economic development and diversification to the engagement of all citizens including youth, seniors, and our urban Aboriginal people. While most initiatives cover city-wide issues, focus is being given to developing a core neighbourhood strategy in our city centre through the new Community Sustainability Taskforce.

As in the past, initiatives will be undertaken by Councillors individually or in pairs. Councillors will investigate and develop new policy or activity ideas and bring their recommendations forward to City Council for approval. Programs like the Urban Aboriginal Accord and REACH were developed out of past initiatives.
