Edmonton Celebrates Its Good Neighbours

May 11, 2010

They drive others around, they shovel snow and they keep an eye out on a neighbouring home.

These people are Edmonton’s good neighbours and 36 of them have been recognized with a City of Edmonton and REACH Edmonton 2010 Good Neighbour Award.

“These good neighbours are making great neighbourhoods, and we heard many heartwarming stories that really demonstrated what an important connection Edmonton has amongst its neighbours,” said Councillor Amarjeet Sohi. “These awards are an excellent way to recognize ordinary citizens who make a difference in the lives of the people next door while helping prevent crime and improving community safety.”

The awards, which coincide with Crime Prevention Week, are meant to encourage connected and safe communities. The recipients were nominated by people in their neighbourhood as a way to formally recognize good deeds, selfless acts of kindness, and people who look out for one another.

Lindsay Kelly, co-chair of REACH Edmonton, says that all of the nominations are a strong example of the important role getting to know your neighbours has towards community safety.

“We all have a role in making our neighbourhoods safe and it’s as easy as getting to know the people that live beside you,” she said. “When we know one another, we look out for one another. This year’s winners showed us that looking out for one another can take many forms, like offering a place to recover from surgery, to helping out after the husband of a neighbour is killed in Afghanistan.”

Recipients were selected in each of Edmonton’s six wards. The City received more than 150 nominations.
