Draft Fort Edmonton Park Master Plan Update Released

April 09, 2010

Following extensive consultation, a draft Master Plan Update for Fort Edmonton Park will be presented to the Community Services Committee of City Council on April 19.

The Fort Edmonton Park Management Company engaged an international attractions consulting firm to assist in the development of an updated vision for Fort Edmonton Park. The company consulted on the proposed vision and how to achieve it. Several key themes were emphasized through the feedback:

  • A desire to preserve the historical and cultural authenticity of the guest experience at Fort Edmonton Park.
  • Appreciation for the use of technology as a way to support accurate story telling but not when technology is perceived as the focal point.
  • Support for improved guest/visitor amenities, a range of new programming, more interpreters on site and the need for good access – both to get to the Park and within the Park itself.

Based on the feedback, the Fort Edmonton Management Company Board of Directors accepted the substance of the consulting firm’s recommendations and revised some of the specific proposals for enhancements to interpretive programming and exhibit approaches.

“As a long-time supporter of Fort Edmonton Park, I appreciate the passion people demonstrated for the Park and their desire to see it become an even better place to learn about Edmonton’s history,” said Doug Goss, Chair of the Fort Edmonton Park Management Company Board.

“We listened to both the concerns raised and the support given during the consultation. The updated master plan provides a clear commitment to historical and cultural integrity and Fort Edmonton Park is committed to retaining its status as a Recognized Museum by the Alberta Museums Association.”

The draft plan and a summary of what was heard during the consultation are available online.

The master plan provides direction to the Fort Edmonton Management Company and administration on the future of the Park. The report to the Community Services committee recommends that the master plan update be approved. Council will have the final decision on approving the updated master plan.
