City Council to Consider Rezoning of Lands for Downtown Arena

December 30, 2010

The Katz Group application to rezone lands for a downtown arena and entertainment district has completed the City’s administrative review process. A report on the review will go to City Council for a Public Hearing on January 18. The report recommends that the rezoning application be supported by Council.

“The recommendation for approval is strictly for rezoning the lands north of 104 Avenue, between 101 and 104 Streets,” says Gary Klassen, General Manager of the City’s Planning and Development department.

“This is not about the approval of a new downtown arena,” emphasizes Klassen, “this is strictly about the rezoning of those lands for use as an arena and entertainment district in the future. The actual development and financing of a new arena are separate issues that, if approved, would be covered under other potential agreements with the City.”

The rezoning application was submitted by the Katz Group, owners of the Edmonton Oilers, in April 2010.

The comprehensive review process includes circulation to City departments and the Edmonton Design Committee, as well as being shared at a public meeting held last May. The review also checks for conformance with major strategic plans and policies, such as the Municipal Development Plan and the Capital City Downtown Plan. Administration is recommending to Council that the rezoning application be supported.

The report on the recommendation to approve the rezoning is now available on the City’s website, in City Council and Public Hearing Agendas, January 18, 2011

During the Public Hearing on January 18, City Council will hear from the applicant as well as from members of the public interested in the rezoning application. Approval of the rezoning requires three readings of Council.
