Commissioning Begins on South LRT Extension
February 05, 2010
Full commissioning of the South LRT Extension from South Campus to Century Park is underway, with trains expected to start moving on the 5.5 kilometres of track on Monday February 8, 2010, shortly after 9am.
Intersections along 111 Street between 23 Avenue and 61 Avenue will close periodically and temporarily to eastbound-westbound vehicles and pedestrians. Edmontonians, visitors and all travelers in this area should be aware of trains moving through the 111 Street LRT intersections, and are encouraged to:
- Always obey all traffic signs, signals, markings and gates.
- Never stop on the tracks.
- Always clear the intersection.
- Never try to race a train through the intersection.
- Always be aware, cautious and patient.
Initially, trains will be traveling at speeds of no more than eight kilometres per hour. Edmonton Transit System (ETS) inspectors will walk with the trains to manually close each of the above intersections as trains pass through. Traffic gates at 111 Street LRT intersections will NOT be activated during Monday’s testing. Edmonton Police Service will provide assistance at 51 Avenue. During subsequent testing next week traffic gates and signals will be activated at 111 Street LRT intersections.
Commissioning – the rigorous testing of all aspects of LRT engineering, such as track durability and speed, vehicle clearance, signalization, communications systems, electrical systems, overhead catenary systems, etc. – will continue through February and March and into April.
The South LRT extension is scheduled to open to public service to Southgate and Century Park on April 24, 2010.
